The most amazing sand sculptures

A sand castle is a type of sand sculpture which resembles a miniature building, often a castle. The two basic building ingredients, sand and water, are available in abundance on a sandy beach, so most sand play occurs there or in a sandpit.

A variant on the sand castle is the drip castle, made by mixing extra water in with the sand, and dripping this wet sand from a fist held above. When the slurry of sand and water lands on existing sand structures, the water is rapidly wicked away, leaving the blob of sand in place. The effect is Gaudi-esque.

Sand castles are typically made by children, simply for the fun of making them. However, adults sometimes engage in contests making sand sculptures, in which the goal is to create structures which don’t appear to be constructed just from sand; they can become large and complex. Other vulnerable media are ice and snow, leading to ice sculptures and snow sculptures.

Adults may find sand castle construction to be almost “Zen-like” in its ability to create total focus and relaxation. Whether an hour or a day, alone or with a group of friends or family, sand castle play is increasingly seen as adult leisure time activity for beach vacationers.

Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone is Not Enough

Manic Street PreachersI’ve loved the Manics since first hearing Motown Junk in 1989. This is probably one of their best songs ever, up there with Little Baby Nothing, From Despair to Where, Black Dog on my Shoulder and If You Tolerate This….Brilliant song.

One Trip Grocery Bag Holder

bagholder.jpg
By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

I use to live in New York and can still remember the searing pain brought about by grocery day. The items always looked manageable at the store, but the palm-cutting plastic grocery bag handles had a way of turning ugly after a few blocks. If I only had the One Trip Bag Holder - a simple handle you clip around your bags to make hauling more efficient and less painful.

Cell phones to communicate with bar codes?

Hand Holding Palm Pilot M500 with Cell PhoneThough at first glance it may appear to be a belated April Fool’s trick, the above tech headline is genuine, and while somewhat futuristic in tone, the connection of everyday items to the Internet and the prospective consumer is not a far cry from widespread reality in its current form across certain parts of Asia.

Moreover, cell phones communicating with newly designed bar codes is something already spreading its roots in Japan, where, for example, customers at McDonald’s fast food outlets are able to scan and receive nutritional information through their mobile handsets. Japanese cell phone owners are also able to receive ad-based information, quotes, etc., from magazine spreads, and film trailers can even be received directly from street-side billboard posters.

Woman with Cell Phone Tucked Into Her Jeans“The cell phone is the natural tool to combine the physical world with the digital world,” commented Cyriac Roeding, head of mobile-phone applications for American television network CBS, who also referred to cell phones as an evolved digital remote control, gathering, translating and delivering encoded information with a quick wave of the handset.

The Apple open the eyes… TV What is Apple TV??

Apple TV(CBS) We are slowly entering the age of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) where TV shows are just as likely to come to us over Internet as they are via cable, satellite or antenna. Today most people who watch Internet TV are sitting at a computer or possibly watching video podcasts on their iPod, but the day will soon come when most of our TVs are connected to the Internet giving us not hundreds, but thousands or even millions of channels to watch.

While we’re not there yet, I had a sneak preview of what it’s like to watch Internet content on a big screen TV when I installed an Apple TV device to a borrowed 47

Unlike some products that only stream media from a computer, Apple TV has its own 40-gigabyte hard disk that you can load up with content transferred from a personal computer running Apple iTunes. So once you install the device to your TV, the next step is to configure iTunes to synchronize (transfer) music, podcasts, movies, TV shows and photographs from your computer Apple TV’s hard drive. Once media has been synched, you don’t need to run your computer or iTunes because it’s all on the Apple TV’s hard drive.

The device will play copy-protected music and video you’ve purchased through iTunes so long as that media is authorized to play on your computer.

In a sense, it turns your widescreen TV into a great big iPod, and like the iPod, it doesn’t work with any applications otherApple TV than iTunes, so you can’t use it to watch protected content downloaded through Windows Media Player. You also can’t stream content directly from Web sites such as CBSNews.com or YouTube.

To me, this is a major limitation of the device. Whether this decision was made to keep things simple or to force people to remain within Apple’s software and services sphere, it’s typical of Apple to create closed systems like this that limit user choice. It also doesn’t have a tuner, so forget being able to use it watch or record broadcast, cable or satellite programs. Still, Apple TV is a drop-dead simple solution that’s easy to set up and easy to use.

Let’s get down to it, Ocean’s 13 is coming June 8th and some naysayers are skeptical that it won’t be anything different than the not-so-great sequel Ocean’s 12. But after you watch this trailer, I think you’re mind will be changed. First off, we got Al Pacino, second off, it’s got everything that made the first one so great - especially Las Vegas. Bring it on Steven Soderbergh!

And does anyone else thing that his new hotel, in the middle of the photo above, looks amazing?!

What are you thoughts? Anyone else getting really frickin’ excited for this in addition to the already insane summer lineup? I even dig the music!

Grand Theft Auto IV Trailer

You can imagine the madness that ensued last night after Rockstar premiered the first Grand Theft Auto IV trailer. The game’s official page came crashing down in no time, but luckly in a matter of minutes a dozen other websites were already mirroring the trailer. Most were at poor quality and/or with logos on them, but thanks to the modern wonder of technology called BitTorrent, we managed to get a hold of the original 720p full-res version. So you can now download the GTA IV trailer locally - or, should our streaming / download servers have a tragic fate of their own, the official website seems to be back online… for now.

As you can (hopefully) see from the trailer, Rockstar is taking us back to Liberty City to New York, in a city modeled with an impressive amount of detail, and more full of life than ever. The day-night cycle has also undergone a majorGTA enhancement in this next-gen rendition, with shadows and rays of light moving along with the sun. The cars and victims pedestrians have a decent amount of detail, and if all the footage shown is in-game stuff, it’s looking good!

The trailer also introduces what could be the main character in Grand Theft Auto IV - a nasty looking guy with a Russian accent, who deals with people. Literally.

“Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different.”

I think it’s safe to assume that he doesn’t intend to “help people” from now on, not unless he’ll mostly be helping himself in doing so. Which is what every GTA game is about, after all. That, of course, and grand thefting autos. And taking prostitues for a ride (in the backseat). And pretty much about every kind of imaginable felony. Including - but not limited to - pissing off Jack Thompson. So, Jack, how do you like the trailer so far?

F.E.A.R. PS3 Available In April, Interview Now

In one of those oh-so-rare twists of fate, the PlayStation 3 version of F.E.A.R. will be arriving sooner in Europe than in North America (four days sooner, to be more precise). And to spice up their launch press releases, Sierra / Vivendi also issued an interview internally conducted with senior producer Rob Loftus, detailing the specific changes they have in storefear for PS3 gamers. But before we get there, here are the dates: in the UK, the PS3 edition of F.E.A.R. will be released on April 20, and in North America on April 24.

The main highlights in this version, ported by Day 1 Studios instead of Monolith, is the addition of a new arcade-style shootout mode, called Instant Action, as well as a new level and a weapon exclusive to the PS3. A brief feature list would look something along these lines:

- Stunning visual effects for an intense “action movie” experience.
- Unpredictable encounters with combat adaptable A.I.
- Multiplayer support for up to 16 players.
- Instant Action Mode - New arcade style mode filled with close quarter’s battles tracking player progress via leader boards for the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system.
- Exclusive PS3 level and weapon giving the gamer a unique experience solely for PS3 owners.
